Herman Miller Flo Monitor Arm receives design award

The Flo Monitor Arm from Herman Miller, Inc., has been chosen to receive a 2010 "Red Dot" award for product design. Considered by many the largest and most distinguished international design competition, the Red Dot program dates to 1955 and includes three areas of judging: product design, communication design, and design concept. In 2010 there were almost 14,000 entries from 68 countries, with more than 4,400 products from 60 countries entered into the product design category.

Flo is a self-powered dynamic monitor arm that allows a flat screen to be used in either an upright viewing position, at desktop level as a touch screen, or anywhere in between. Flo stands out from its competitors because it addresses three major needs of end-users and specifiers: free flowing action with smooth adjustability; a unique visual indicator weight gauge; and compatibility with touch-screen technology. Designed by Herman Miller subsidiary Colebrook Bosson Saunders, Flo is consistent with the UK firm's reputation for both performance and purity of design.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, the initiator of the red dot design award, comments: "As always, our jury cast a very careful eye over the products submitted. Design quality has asserted itself clearly in the judging process, with genuine and new creative solutions also being rewarded. Both of these criteria are not just yardsticks for good design, but also for the potential for success on the market."

Flo adds the Red Dot recognition to its earlier awards, including a 2010 Best of NeoCon award in Technology Support and the 2010 National Ergonomics Conference and Exposition (NECE) "Attendee's Choice Award."

The Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany will exhibit Flo, together with the other prize-winning products, from July 5 to August 1, 2011, in the exhibition "Design on stage–Winners of the Red Dot award: Product Design 2011." With more than 1,500 products spread over an area of more than 4,000 m2, the red dot design museum houses the largest permanent exhibition of contemporary design worldwide.
