COATICOOK, Que. / ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Canadian custom cabinetry manufacturer Group Cabico Inc. has acquired Ontario-based custom cabinetry and closets producer The Elmwood Group Ltd. Sales of the combined firm are more than $100 million, making Cabico the largest privately held custom cabinet manufacturer in Canada and the third largest in North America, the company said.

The transaction also includes the acquisition of Maplecraft Doors Ltd., an Ontario-based manufacturer of cabinet doors offered in a variety of styles and wood species. Terms of the sale, announced Jan. 13, were not provided.

The Quebec-based Group Cabico (Groupe Cabico) is ranked 117 in the latest FDMC 300 listing of top-selling wood products manufacturers. Elmwood Fine Custom Cabinetry is ranked 165.

The combined company will have 600 employees and more than 350,000 square feet of manufacturing space."Cabico and Elmwood are committed to positioning their businesses for strong growth, and this is an important step that builds on the strengths and reputations of two of the leading custom cabinetry manufacturers in North America,” said Alain Ouzilleau, Cabico’s CEO. "Our combined product offering and network of more than 600 dealers give us unprecedented reach across the U.S. and Canadian markets.”

Ouzilleau will also become CEO of both Elmwood and Maplecraft. Elmwood will maintain its manufacturing facilities in St. Catharines, producing product under the Elmwood brand. Plans call to increase the production capacity at the 150,000-square-foot Elmwood plant in the near future, according to a statement from Cabico.

"Together, with our 250 employees, we are very excited to join Cabico and its 350 employees, who are as dedicated to making fine quality cabinetry as we are,” said Bob Wiens, one of Elmwood’s former co-owners. “Joining forces with Cabico makes us stronger and ensures the Elmwood brand will continue to be synonymous with innovation, quality and service.”

Former co-owner Mike Vahrmeyer added, “This transaction is an important milestone in Elmwood’s future development.” Elmwood was founded in 1973.

Cabico has been producing cabinetry since 1986. Offerings include the Unique Series of fully customizable handcrafted cabinetry and the Essence Series, offered in a selection of materials and finishes. Both face-frame and frameless styles of cabinetry are available.
