CROSSETT, AR and HAWTHORNE, FL - Georgia-Pacific said it plans to close two wood manufacturing plants and lay off approximately 1,100 workers due to "poor market conditions."

About 700 workers will lose their jobs at G-P's plywood and stud plant in Crossett, AR (shown). G-P said it will indefinitely suspend those operations. Laid-off workers will receive 60 days pay and assistance from the company to file for unemployment benefits.

Production at G-P.s plywood plant in Hawthorne, FL, will halt November 7 and is also being billed as an indefinite curtailment, leaving open the possibility that the plant will reopen when market conditions improve. The shut down will impact about 400 workers.
