Georgia-Pacific said it plans to close two wood manufacturing plants and lay off approximately 1,100 workers due to "poor market conditions."

About 700 workers will lose their jobs at G-P's plywood and stud plant in Crossett, AR (shown). G-P said it will indefinitely suspend those operations. Laid-off workers will receive 60 days pay and assistance from the company to file for unemployment benefits.

Production at G-P.s plywood plant in Hawthorne, FL, will halt November 7 and is also being billed as an indefinite curtailment, leaving open the possibility that the plant will reopen when market conditions improve. The shut down will impact about 400 workers.

The Hawthorne plant converts pine logs into plywood. Products are sold under the names Plytanium and Sturd-I-Floor.
