Q: Will a finish on spalted maple stop the spalting process?
A: Spalting (those dark wavy lines that look like someone took a black marker and doodled on the wood) is the result of the white rot fungus being active when the MC of wood is roughly 40 percent MC or higher. It is common in logs that have been left in the damp woods too long. In fact, shiitake mushrooms are one of the white rot fungi!
So, dry wood will no longer develop any further spalting.
One word of caution. Many people are highly allergic to the dust from spalted wood. Use excellent protection techniques to safeguard your employees from such dust.
