Determining true mahogany

Q: How can I separate true mahogany (Honduras) from the others?

A: American mahogany has ripple marks which can be seen on the tangential (flatsawn) surface. Ripples (wavy bands) appear to run from edge to edge on a piece of lumber and might be spaced a 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch apart. It's hard to describe but easy to see and recognize once they are pointed out.
