HOME STORAGE SOLUTIONS

BUSINESS The home storage organizing systems industry is estimated at approximately $4 billion. The total industry, including home organization products such as bins and baskets and do-it-yourself organization products, is at $7.7 billion.

Severely impacted in 2008 by the crash of the new home market — 75% of its sales — closet firms reached into kitchen cabinetry, outsourced production, joined franchises and expanded into remodeling. Turning to garages and other home organization solutions as a way to diversify and augment their product lines, closet companies began to seek additional leads and ways to define themselves and their services. The Association of Closet and Storage Professionals (ACSP) developed a certification program for design professionals.

CLOSET DESIGN TRENDS Most closets (56%) are white or solid wood and veneer (30%). Other popular trends include the use of European designs, embedded LED lighting, sliding doors, textured cabinetry and shelving surfaces with dark finishes.

QUICK STATS:

• 65% of closets are remodels; 35% new construction.
• 3.6% annual closets growth through 2015.
• 81% of closets firms sell direct to consumers.

Trade Shows
The Cabinets & Closets Conference & Expo, set for April 9-11, 2014 in Somerset, NJ, is the only industry trade show devoted solely to the professional closets and home storage and organization market.

Previously known as the Closets & Home Organization Conference & Expo, and now in its 10th year, the annual show was rebranded as the Cabinets & Closets Conference & Expo in 2013.

This “Total Storage Solutions” event draws from the inherent similarities and synergies of the dynamic closet and custom cabinet markets, while also paying homage to the distinctive differences that make each of these utilitarian products unique. The trade show also capitalizes on custom cabinet companies that are crossing over to win closet storage business and vice versa.

Key components of this Northeast Show include all-day educational workshops aimed at closet companies and cabinet companies from owners and manufacturers to designers and custom woodworkers.

A gala reception on opening night presents winners of two of the woodworking and closets organization industry’s top awards programs: Closets Top Shelf Design Awards and Custom Woodworking Business Design Portfolio Awards. Plus, two-day expo features cabinet and closet hardware, components, computer software, woodworking machinery and other products and services.  Learn more at CabinetsandClosetsExpo.com.
