EL PASO, Texas - Canadian furniture manufacturer South Shore Furniture will build a 130,000-square-foot warehouse and transfer center in El Paso to ease growing demand for its products in Juarez, Mexico. South Shore will invest $8 million in the warehouse, which will employ 18.
Employing 1,000 workers across six North American locations, the Quebec-founded South Shore has been assembling furniture since the early 1980s.
Construction of the new facilities should start this week, said Jean Fortin, the company’s vice president of supply chain and logistics.
“Then in the next five years, we’re going to more than double the number of employees we have at that location,” Fortin said.
El Paso is providing an incentive package for the expansion, offering property tax rebates totaling $376,725 over the next 10 years. The county has also approved $160,651 in tax breaks.
To receive the incentives, South Shore vowed to hire a specific number of employees, pay above-average wages, and offer affordable health benefits.
South Shore Furniture produces beds, desks, dressers, cabinets, accessories, and office furnishings for women.
