SAN DIEGO, CA - Wood iPad cash registers are popping up all over, allowing small shop owners to use the latest technology in creative wood frames to ring up sales. Two companies, Happy Owl Studio and Tinkering Monkey, both create these next-generation wood registers.

The team at San Diego, CA-based Happy Owl studio, self-described "Apple devotees," launched their "cash register of the future" in 2012. The Cashbox, as it is called, is an all-in-one iPad point of sale system featuring a bamboo box handcrafted from Cali Bamboo plywood available in Flat Grain Amber, Flat Grain Natural and Marble Woven.

Each box is available with custom laser engraving. "A lot of people are getting lost in the surface-level beauty of the Cashbox," said Devon Read, Happy Owl Studio CEO says, "but the real beauty is under the hood. Payment processing with iPad is a game-changer."

Happy Owl products manufactures The Cashbox in San Diego at leased space in Makerplace, a 14,000-square-foot public access workshop. It contains a production wood shop, metal shop, flatbed laser engravers, California approved paint booth, 3D printers, CNC router, CNC mills, CNC plasma torch, a wood lathe, a metal lathe, a TIG/MIG welding lab, sewing and craft lab (complete with long arm sewing machine) and an electronics lab.

Oakland, CA-based Tinkering Monkey, also created a wood iPad cash register for small shops. Its Stand for Square kit features both an iPad stand and cash box handmade from Baltic birch plywood and is custom made to fit an iPad, cash drawer and Square credit card reader.

The Tinkering Monkey team, Mike Cheung and Paula Chang, design and hand-build products in the garage of their Oakland, CA, home.

Both Happy Owl Studio and Tinkering Monkey were recently featured in the New York Times.
