Restoration of the Mahogany Wood at Ted’s Montana Grill

CLIENT PROFILE

With 47 locations across the United States, Ted’s Montana Grill defines the Great American West with its ingredients, menu and hospitality while preserving and building the bison herds in this country.

The restaurant features the largest bison menu in the world and is the result of the collaboration between business leader, philanthropist, environmentalist and outdoorsman Ted Turner and restaurateur George McKerrow Jr., a pioneer and leader in casual dining.

THE CHALLENGE

Ted’s Montana Grill’s midtown Manhattan location was experiencing a tremendous amount of wear and tear on its wood finishes. Restaurant staff found it to be a constant challenge to keep the mahogany wood surfaces in pristine condition – on the bar and in the dining booths, millwork, point-of-sales stations, cabinets, shelving, baseboards and partitions.

Ted’s Montana Grill sought a long-term solution that would beautify and restore the wood to its original condition and protect it for years to come. This would immediately add to the restaurant’s appearance and create durability for a restaurant that sees plenty of traffic on a daily basis.

THE SOLUTION

At the outset of this project, Stuart Dean teams worked closely with Ted’s Montana Grill staff to minimize interruption to the restaurant’s business. Technicians worked overnight (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) while the restaurant was closed.

Stuart Dean specialists used Ted Montana Grill’s approved stain, thereby maintaining consistency with the original factory finish of the mahogany wood throughout the restaurant. Stuart Dean specialists also applied a GREENGUARD– certified, low-VOC, pre-catalyzed, water-bourne clear coat protectant that dried faster and left little odor. This enabled the restaurant to continue operating with minimal inconvenience to staff and customers.

At the conclusion of the job, chemicals spilled on the bar top by cleaning staff created a drip line on the newly refinished top. Stuart Dean quickly fixed the problem, strip-coating and reapplying refinishing stain to the area affected.

Stuart Dean technicians also advised restaurant staff to be diligent about removing any spillage on the bar from the lemonade dispenser, because the residue would serve to strip away the bar’s finish over time.

THE BENEFITS

Stuart Dean was able to restore the damaged wood finishes to their original condition in an affordable way while providing a long-term solution that would improve the restaurant’s appearance for years to come.

Day-to-day operation and activities at the restaurant were not affected during the restoration.

Ted’s Montana Grill has partnered with Stuart Dean on restoration and refinishing jobs across the restaurant chain’s 47 restaurants. Restaurant managers see value in having one point of contact at Stuart Dean throughout the entire project, thereby streamlining communications and creating efficiency.
