Lumber producer Sierra Pacific Industries gave $6 million to the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. The lumber producer is supporting construction of an advanced wood products laboratory, part of OSU’s Oregon Forest Science Complex that will create a new home for the college. Plum Creek donated $1 million in September to the Complex.

USDA and Softwood Lumber Board award $3 million - $1.5 million to each of two winning projects - to support tall wood demonstration projects in New York and Portland, Oregon.

U.S. Secretary Tom Vilsack's awards in for the successful projects in the Tall Wood Building Competition was met with enthusiasm at D.R. Johnson, manufacturer of CLT panels and glu-laminated beams.

A 10-story timber tower is planned by SHoP Architects for Manhattan's Chelsea Neighborhood. If approved, it would be the first in New York City to use cross laminated timber construction (CLT).

Cross laminated timbers are being used in mass quantities for the tallest wood building so far: a 121-unit, 10-story apartment complex in London. Architects Waugh Thistleton, CLT and engineers Ramboll say the most exciting aspect of the project is its sheer size and its completion thousands of cubic meters of concrete. It will save 2,400 tons of carbon, compared to an equivalent block with a concrete frame.

The Oregon Legislature has approved $29.7 million in state bonding to help fund the Oregon Forest Science Complex at Oregon State University in Corvallis. The lab will study and develop CLT cross laminated timber for high rise buildings, among other projects.

Wood buildings designer and famed architect Michael Green teamed with Finnish engineered lumber and LVL timber manufacturer Metsä Wood to re-engineer the Empire State Building in LVL timbers.
