Wood panel and TFM shipments grow in AugustLEESBURG, VA -- North American composite panel shipments in August totaled 461 MMSF, up 7.7% compared to the same month a year ago, according to monthly data compiled by the Composite Panel Association (CPA).

Year-to-date shipments through August were still down by 2% compared to 2010.

Particleboard shipments were 271 MMSF (3/4” basis) in August, up 6.6% from last year, with year-to-date shipments down 2.3%. MDF shipments were 154 MMSF (3/4” basis) in August, up 13.4% from last year and down 1.5% year-to-date. Hardboard and Engineered Wood Siding and Trim shipments were down 8.8% from the same month one year ago and down 1.9% year-to-date.

  The CPA also reported that shipments of thermally fused melamine (TFM) ipanels n August were 111 MMSF, up 5.7% from the same month one year ago and up 7.8% from last month. Year-to-date TFM shipments through August were 871 MMSF, down slightly from 875 MMSF in 2010. U.S. capacity utilization rates in August improved 3.9% from a year ago and Canadian utilization rates declined 4.1%.
