Finishing Symposium targets systems, improving performance

Moderated by FDMC and Woodworking Network editor Karl Forth, the full-day finishing symposium will look at a variety of new and emerging finishing technologies and best practices. Finishing system organization, performance measurement and problem solving are addressed. The Finishing Symposium is sponsored by Milesi, Superfici, and Burkle.

Finishing Symposium Schedule:

9 a.m. Establishing a finishing system in your company -- Phil Stevenson of AWFI will discuss establishing a finishing system, setting up finishing standards, performance measurements and developing training. Stevenson will also talk about when to create and automate the process, describe different types of finishes and equipment, and how to establish standard process stapes.

10:15 a.m. Problem solving in wood finishing and surface preparation -- Jason Chiu of the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing, University of British Columbia, will speak about problem solving in wood finishing and new developments in surface preparation, including sanding.

11:15 a.m.  Experiences in finishing from a consultant -- D.C. Clark of Clark Deco is a finishing expert and consultant who will describe his experiences as a distributor visiting shops and recommendations.

Noon – Lunch

1:15 p.m.  Become familiar with newer types of finishing chemistry -- David Jackson of Gemini Coatings will discuss finishes that many shops may not have adopted, such as polyester, two-component polyurethane and some UV finishes.

2 p.m.  Latest trends in finishing solutions, automation, on-line connectivity, and Industry 4.0 — Superfici’s Gloria Valtorta, business unit manager, surface treatment, and Michael Anderson, Midwest Area sales manager, will discuss remote maintenance and productivity enhancement for flatline finishing systems.

3 p.m.  New finishing technology from Italy, soft touch and natural look coatings -- Marcello Vitale of Milesi will talk about Italian wood finish technologies, Block Chain Addition technology, soft touch coatings, and natural look coatings.

3:45 p.m. Future trends in wood finishing and distressing – Les Smith of Sherwin-Williams will look at finishing trends his company is seeing, and the current state of wood distressing.

4:30 - 5 p.m.  Finishing Professionals Consulting Panel – The last session of the day will end with a question and answer period in which attendees will be able to ask any speaker a question or describe a problem they are having in their finishing operation. “Bring your own finishing problem to this event.”
