What is new in wood finishing? A full-day finishing symposium s set for the day before 2017 AWFS Fair will explore new technologies and best methods that you can use in your business. Newer finishes such as polyester, polyurethane and UV finishes will be discussed, along with water-borne and low-emission products.

The full-day seminar sponsored by Milesi Wood Coatings before AWFS Fair will include presentations and an opportunity to talk to suppliers and finishing experts face-to-face with your questions. The program is being developed and presented by FDMC magazine and Woodworking Network.

The day-long event will take place in the Las Vegas Convention Center, the same venue as AWFS Fair. Running all day Tuesday, July 18, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Pricing: $229 early bird before June 30; $295 regular, including lunch, and an evening reception.

9 a.m. Phil Stevenson of AWFI, a leading finishing consultant, will talk about training in which the goal is to create a system for finishing within a company rather than training a person that could leave the company. He will discuss how to organize a finishing system and set up ways to measure your company’s finishing performance.

10:15 a.m. Jason Chiu of Centre for Advanced Wood Processing will speak on problem solving in wood finishing, covering such areas as spraying and finish application, finish quality, dust mitigation, and finish process issues, including a discussion of some of the newest methods and technology.

11:15 a.m. Phil Evans of the University of British Columbia will discuss the value of research in wood finishing, based on work that he and his students have done on topics such as coating formation, grain raising, cracking of finishes, blotching and other issues.

12 p.m. Lunch

1:15 p.m. David Jackson of Gemini, a manufacturer of wood finishes, will discuss finishes that many shops have not yet adopted, such as polyester, two-component polyurethane and some UV finishes.

2 p.m. Wayne Blackwell, SAMES KREMLIN Inc. will discuss new developments in spray guns. Wayne Blackwell will discuss paint and powder coating application, improving transfer efficiency and reducing VOCs in your finishing operation.

3 p.m. Pierre Letellier of Decoboard Enterprise in San Bernardino, California, will describe his company's panel coating operation and the challenges of finishing in California.

3:30 p.m. Andrew Walton, Keyland Polymer Material Sciences, a maker of powder coatings, will explain UV-cured powder coating chemistry and attributes of these coating materials applications for UV-cured powder coatings. Andrew Walton will describe the powder coating process.

4 p.m. Les Smith of Sherwin-Williams will speak on, "What's new with Waterborne Coatings: Changing perceptions with advanced European technology."

At the end of the day, presenters will be available to answer any questions from the audience. Participating companies and specialists will be available to answer any direct questions about finishing materials, equipment and methods.
