FAS vs. No. 1 Common

Q. With the price of FAS 1-Face just a bit above No.1 Common, our supplier is encouraging us to try FAS 1-Face instead of No.1 Common. We did a test run and found that our yields did not change much at all. So, we are not going to change grade. Does this make sense to you?

Grain raising in cabinets

Q. We have some cabinets made from pine and I wonder what is the chance of grain raising. We work in an with an average EMC of 7 to 9 percent. The cabinets are then finished with water base coating. My question is what will this do to the grain (creating raised grain). I know dimensions change but what is the probability of the grain raising?

Poor gluing in hot weather

Q. In hot weather, we are noticing that we are getting some poor gluing at times. We do keep our adhesive refrigerated slightly to avoid getting it too hot. We try to keep the [plant cool too, but it is hard on hot days. What else should be look at doing?

Causes of veneer buckle

Q. We purchase dried veneer and do our own laminating. Sometimes the veneer is not flat but has what we call buckle or wavy spots. Can you tell us what is causing them? We’re especially interested if it is the way we handle the veneer?

Wavy surfaces in planed lumber

Q. When I plane lumber, I am getting a significant wavy surface which takes a lot of sanding to get smooth. I know that planers do make a wavy surface, but this one seems a bit more wavy with longer waves. Does this make sense and can you tell me what is causing this? We also are seeing some chatter with narrow pieces.
