, Redmond, WA, partner Tracey Hepner foresaw the downturn, she started immediately to look "outside the box" to reach new and diversified markets. She said she hoped to sustain IWS through the downturn, then catapult it "to being recognized as an industry leader."

IWS' first product is in the outdoor patio cabinet market. Other products are close to being marketable, both in healthcare and the modular products industries (shown).

"To bring new products to market takes time and money, of which IWS had little," Hepner acknowledges. "And I wanted to vary the product offerings enough to allow for growth in a number of different cabinet areas."

IWS was featured in last year's WOOD 100, an annual showcase of the industry's most innovative firms. Inclusion in the WOOD 100 list celebrates those companies who have pushed the envelope in manufacturing, management and marketing practices.
