Senate Passes STURDY Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate passed an amended version of the STURDY Act by unanimous consent on Thursday, bringing a mandatory furniture stability standard within one final vote of becoming law. The Senate version of STURDY (S. 3232) – the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act – was modified from the original version passed by the House in June 2021. Therefore, the legislation must go back to the House one more time for a final vote.

Taylor debuts guitars with urban sourced eucalyptus wood

EL CAJON, Calif. — Taylor Guitars has announced new guitars made with urban sourced eucalyptus wood that the company calls Urban Ironbark. Featured in the company's redesigned 500 Series instruments, Urban Ironbark, is a brand-new tonewood that debuts as the back and sides of its 514ce and 512ce models. The tonewood is a first for the guitar-making industry and joins Urban Ash as the second tonewood in Taylor's product line to come from Taylor's urban sourcing initiative in collaboration with West Coast Arborists, Inc. (WCA).

Hurricane Ian damages homes and businesses, and causes widespread outages

Hurricane Ian slammed into the coasts of Florida damaging and destroying homes, businesses and infrastructure. While it is not certain how the wood products industry has fared as Hurricane Ian continues to pound the coasts, several plants large and small are in the path. A quick count found that 13 of the FDMC300 list of top companies have headquarters or manufacturing plants in the affected area. WoodworkingNetwork editors have begun the process of reaching out to these companies and other companies and facilities that are in danger.
