Ethan Abramson entered woodworking following in the footsteps of his grandfather. Trained at Bard College in Studio Arts, he began making furniture in 2008 in Brooklyn, NY, then moved his shop to Westchester, NY.

His oak Irving Chair "pays homage to my grandfather, a life-long wood worker and daily inspiration for me," Abramson says, noting his furniture is "hand-built using classic and modern woodworking techniques." The Irving chair, available in gray or natural oak, retails at his online store for $630 and takes two to three weeks for delivery.

A nominee for Martha Stewart's American Made awards program, Abramson does custom residential and commercial interior woodworking projects, as well furniture made to order from his online store.

All furniture is handcrafted on site in the shop, built using a blend of classic and modern woodworking techniques. Wood from reclaimed sources or sustainable foresting is used whenever possible. Pieces are protected with a hand applied all-natural finish.

“The process of building a piece of furniture is just as important to me as how it looks in the end," says Abramson. "All the solid wood I use had a story before it came to my shop. My goal is to build on that story, to see the characteristics in the wood and what it wants to become. I think of my work not based in machines and numbers, but as a completely creative process, as if I am painting.”
