AMSTERDAM -- Production of a beech plywood flat-packed DIY bike from Sandwichbike, a brand of PedalFactory, began Dec 1, 2013.

Designer Basten Leijh developed the model, which was inspired by the idea of flat packing and ready-to-assemble production.

The bike consists of two weather-coated, beech plywood frames and aluminum cylinders, all fitting in a small, flat package, which includes the tools.

“If you can make a sandwich, you can surely build a Sandwichbike,” the manufacturer of the beech wood bicycle says.

Leijh developed this concept in 2006 when his industrial design studio competed in the International Bicycle Design competition. With the help of Pieter Janssen, he designed a bike made out of two wooden plates, and it won fifth place.

Initially distributed in Europe, as of January 2014 the bike is now available worldwide at a cost of $799 Euro.
