Part 5: Environmental Regulations: Do the Right Thing

Posted: 04/26/2013 11:29AM

The U.S. home construction and cabinet markets are undergoing a dramatic transformation as they rebound from the economic downturn of 2008. Today’s buyers are changing, styles and preferences have transformed and environmental messaging is now part of the regular conversation.

To find out more about these trending topics that impact cabinet sales, Timber Products Company caught up with Rob Kass, vice president and chief marketing officer at Elkay Manufacturing Company, for his thoughts on homebuilding, style trends and meeting environmental requirements.

We featured a new question each day this week, including home size, design trends, young home buyers and the impact of baby boomers.  Today’s question is on environmental regulations.

TP: How have your cabinet brands adapted to environmental regulations, like CARB, and the growing market demand for certified wood?

Kass: Many of today’s consumers expect the companies they buy products from to be working to reduce or eliminate any negative impacts to the environment. Some of these expectations take the form of legislation, such as CARB compliance, but others are just consumers expecting companies to do the right thing. Often, doing the right thing for the environment is also just good business. An example of this would be Elkay’s use of regional manufacturing facilities around the country to supply cabinetry. This allows us to build our products closer to the homes they will go into. It is good for the environment as it reduces the carbon footprint of each kitchen sold, and it is good for business because less is spent on fuel to transport products around the country.  It also benefits as the shorter shipping distances help us reduce lead times and the opportunities for damage.
