Project: Crucifix
Materials: The cross is constructed of black walnut, and the corpus was carved from basswood. The nails/spikes in the hand and feet and the crown of thorns are forged from solid copper plate.
Construction: The cross is laminated over a welded steel tubular structure to provide strength and rigidity. Since the crucifix is meant to hang straight, the hanger attachments on the cross protrude beyond the front surface of the cross to make up for the weight of the corpus. The back walnut of the cross was laminated to the steel inner structure and then hand scalloped for an aging effect. The body was hand carved from solid blocks of basswood.
Project Notes: The cross members are lashed with rope by hand.
