Wendy Scott, Sophisticated Storage Solutions, Bridgewater, NJ, is a finalist in the 2014 Top Shelf Design Awards competition with her project "Dream Dressing Room" entered in the Closet: Laminate more than 18 linear feet category.

Project Title: Dream Dressing Room

Project Description: With nowhere to go but up, a spiral stair case was added to an existing closet and a Dream Dressing Room was built into the nooks and crannies of an attic. Clothing and cherished possessions were placed behind glass doors to keep them dust free and within view. Special accommodations were made to honor the clients' jewelry, scarf and tie collections.

List materials used in the project, including wood, veneer, laminate, hinges, decorative accessories, etc.: White melamine, white thermofoil fronts and moulding with gray pencil glaze, glass and mirror, Carrera marble, custom made fluted filler pull outs with scarves and push/touch opening feature, October Company jewelry inserts, custom made, velvet lined doors with necklace hooks, custom made, velvet padded bracelet rolls and satin sunglass holders, custom tie cabinet, acrylic shoe stops, full extension drawer slides, drawer dividers, acrylic shelf dividers, glass knobs with Matte nickel accents

Describe any design challenges, i.e. obstructions, etc.: The challenge was turning an attic into a suitable dressing room. We encountered angled ceilings, over all low height and a tray ceiling that was not centered on the space. In the back of the closet near the spiral stair case, the walls were nooks that were raised off the floor at three different heights. This became an issue with doors and not hitting the corners of the higher ledges. The homeowner wanted everything behind doors, and no visible drilling holes. Every panel was hand drilled to accommodate.

Was the design created by hand or software program? If software program, which one did you use?: The design itself was created using KCD software, but the specialty pieces were hand drawn. (Fluted filler pull outs and jewelry cabinet)

Describe the installation process and any challenges.: The installation was done in stages. We put up the shells of the units and adjusted for height differences. The units on the angled ceiling walls had to be resized because the floor was so uneven. This area was also a challenge when doing the crown and finishing off the ends. Spacing for fillers were measured, then cut to fit. Once everything was in, we took new height measurements for the crown because the ceiling and floors were uneven. We used a 3-4" board and floated the crown on it. Shelving, drawers and doors were then installed as well as accessories. The crown, base and marble were the last items installed.
