Dave Skinner of We Do Closets, Russell, Ontario, Canada, is a finalist in the 2014 Top Shelf Design Awards competition with his project "Jewel of a Space" entered in the Closet: Laminate less than 18 linear feet category.

Project Description: Both of the homeowners wanted something special from their regular size 6'x9' closet. "Create something elegant" were the marching orders we received. We went to work and integrated elements that would work well together and turn the space into something larger that it is. We maintained all of the functionality of the closet allowing both owners to have more than ample storage space for their clothing.

A pullout laundry drawer using recycle bins was suggested by the client as the best way serve her needs for that weekly chore. A dedicated charging area on the counter above meets the new reality of today’s “fully charged” lifestyle. The sense of elegance comes from the traditional cherry closetry that complements the oak flooring throughout the house. The client was able to add her touch of elegance to the space by choosing a beautiful granite that was to become the home for their picture frames, perfume bottles and a lovely piece of glassware.

Although matching wall paneling was discussed, it was decided that having too much cherry in this small space would be overwhelming and that the painted walls would give a better focus to the traditional cherry color. The vertical fluted trim combined with attention to detail in fitting the fillers to the wall adds a sense of richness from days gone by. Stylish LED lighting allows the owner to highlight the areas that she chooses and brings out the warmth of the cherry wood color.

Crown molding to the ceiling is the final piece of the puzzle that brings all of the elements together and gives the small space it’s luxury feel. This closet is proof that with the right elements, proper choice of materials and attention to the fine details even a basic 6’x9’ closet can be turned into a jewel of a space.

List materials used in the project, including wood, veneer, laminate, hinges, decorative accessories, etc.: Cherryblossom laminate, thermofoil fluted trim, synergy elite satin-nickel rod, granite countertops, crown moulding, laundry/recycle boxes, soft-close slides, plinth moulding, shoe moulding

Describe any design challenges, i.e. obstructions, etc.: Needed to incorporate air vent floor grates and an attic access hatch into the design.

Was the design created by hand or software program? If software program, which one did you use?: Software. A proprietary software from the STO company.

Describe the installation process and any challenges.: The two-drawer cabinets were installed and required adjustable leveling feet to ensure that all the cabinets were at the correct height. Granite was installed on the hutches. The upper cabinetry was installed and exact fillers were used between the edge of the fluted cabinets and the walls. Crown moulding was installed.
