Record-Setting May U.S. Hardwood Exports, Red Oak Prices Soften

U.S. hardwood export volumes and values spiked up to 18% and 33% respectively in first five months of 2014. However, prices slowed in June with red oak availability and price softening a contributing factor.

Emerald Ash Borers are likely to kill 99 percent of the U.S. ash wood trees, says the U.S. Forest Service. The super cold winter did not even slow the insects. Infested areas have been quarantined in 22 states.

ScotiaBank says its Forest Products Index edged up in May 2014 as Western Spruce, Pine and Fir and OSB panel rose, then fell back in June. Lumber and panel buyers exercised caution as housing start growth slowed.
