With a tree, you have leaves, needles, and/or twigs, which are usually a dead give-away of a tree's species. But lumber and finished wood products are more challenging. Distinguished International Wood Collectors Society Jean-Claude Cerre  videos demonstrate his technique for preparing stunning wood sample  photography under magnification, helping identify species precisely using the transverse structure of wood, "like a fingerprint in humans."
