CNC Equipment's Impact on Small Wood Shops

Posted: 03/05/2013 4:14PM

Cabinet Makers Association’s recent survey of 567 cabinetmakers and custom woodworkers provides information on the use of CNC in primarily small shops. Two-thirds of respondents represented shops with revenues of less than $1 million; and nearly half worked out of 5,000 square feet or less of space.

• Respondents were split on the presence of CNC equipment in their shops: 48.4% with and 51.5% without.

• Four out of five shops (81.0%) with over $1 million in sales use CNC compared to only one-third (34.5%) of smaller shops.

• When asked how CNC has impacted the financial side of their business, nearly half (49.5%) said they are “much more” profitable; a third (33.5%) said they are “a little more” profitable and 10.6% responded their profits are about the same.
