Coatesville, PA—November 29, 2010 In recognition for their pursuit of environmental excellence, Keystone Foods’ Valley Township Distribution Center (DC) recently attained Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification in the new construction category (LEED-NC).
LEED is an internationally recognized third-party, green building certification system developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The accreditation verifies that a building was designed and constructed using strategies to improve energy efficiency, water management, and other environmental resources.
The Valley facility was constructed as Keystone recognized the opportunity to improve its environmental impact. With over 400 McDonald’s restaurants in service and 9.8 million cases delivered, the company wanted to demonstrate its dedication to KeySTARTM, Keystone’s strategy for Corporate Social Responsibility. As a result, the distribution center is the first DC in the US McDonald’s Supplier system to be LEED certified thanks to the efforts of its employees.
Keystone has incorporated a variety of sustainable practices into the design, construction, and operations of the distribution center. These ideas focused on five key areas of human and environmental health, including: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
Some highlights of the Valley Distribution Center are:
* Sustainable site development with reduced light pollution; alternative transportation options; a stormwater design for quality control
* Water & Energy savings: efficient landscaping; optimized energy performance; enhanced refrigerant management
* Materials selection: diverting 75% of construction waste from disposal; using more than 10% recycled content; use of certified sustainable wood
* Indoor environmental quality: use of low pollutant-emitting materials
