Viridian Reclaimed Wood Named a BuildingGreen Top-10 Product

SAN FRANCISCO – Viridian Reclaimed Wood has been selected as one of BuildingGreen’s Top-10 products for the coming year by BuildingGreen, Inc., publisher of GreenSpec and Environmental Building News (EBN). The eleventh annual awards, announced at the U.S. Green Building Council’s Greenbuild Conference in San Francisco, are BuildingGreen’s editors’ picks of the most innovative green building products, drawn from product reviews published in GreenSpec and EBN.

“After a year of a record droughts and floods across the country, this year’s Top-10 products include several for managing moisture in buildings or for irrigating more responsibly,” says BuildingGreen founder and GreenSpec executive editor Alex Wilson. “In selecting this year’s products, we looked for companies addressing resilience, energy efficiency, thoughtful use of materials, cutting-edge system optimization, and other needs.”

This year’s selections include software for modeling heat and moisture flows, concrete masonry units with sequestration of carbon dioxide, a low-e coating for windows that opens new possibilities to energy-efficient, passive solar windows, and an LED streetlight meant to deliver 100 lumens per watt to precisely the area where the light needed.

The 2013 selections highlight the role of building science and system-level thinking in driving today’s green product innovations. The LEED rating systems also continue to encourage development of green products; GreenSpec users can find products organized by LEED credits as well as by building category and the CSI MasterFormat structure.

Viridian’s entire portfolio of reclaimed wood products was selected as a single top-10 product this year, including its flooring, tabletops, paneling, decking and veneers—the vast majority of which are derived from shipping pallets and crates reclaimed from Pacific Northwest ports and harbors.

GreenSpec is the leading national directory of green building products. Products are selected based on criteria developed over the past 20 years. Manufacturers do not pay to be listed in GreenSpec, and neither GreenSpec nor Environmental Building News carry advertising; both are supported by users of the information. “Our policy of not accepting money from product manufacturers allows us to be objective in our review of products,” said Wilson. The GreenSpec product database is also available online as part of the BuildingGreen Suite.

Other BuildingGreen resources include Environmental Building News, the oldest and most widely respected newsletter in the green building field, and LEEDuser.com, a resource for teams pursuing certification through the LEED Rating System.
