At Ligna 2013: Jowat Exhibits Formaldehyde-Free AdhesivesDETMOLD, GERMANY -- Jowat AG, with headquarters in Detmold, is one of the leading international suppliers of adhesives for all industrial sectors. At the Ligna 2013 in Hanover, Jowat AG will, among others, present its adhesives developed for surface finishing: free of formaldehyde and powerful in performance.

In the efficient manufacture of furniture, innovative dispersion and hot melt adhesives are alternatives with high functionalities to the widely used urea formaldehyde resins (UF adhesives). In addition the impact on health and environment is minimized.

Whether laminating surfaces of wood-based panels with resinated decor papers, veneers, thermoplastic foils or with CPL and HPL – Jowat AG is supplying three tried and proven dispersions from the Jowacoll-product family. Tailored for the diverse applicator systems, these dispersions are convincing due to their outstanding product characteristics: Penetration of the adhesive when veneers are used has been substantially reduced, discolourations have been largely eliminated by adjusting the pH-value.

One significant mark of quality in a laminated product is a smooth and even surface. The most suitable products to meet this requirement are hot melt adhesives, since they have a solid content of 100 percent: no liquid (water), no swelling of the surface of the wood-based substrates.

The latest development from the Jowat-Toptherm family – a system of unfilled polyolefin (PO) hot melts – ensures optimized application amounts, while at the same time creating thin, but also very hard bondlines. These are the characteristics which will in the final result provide a surface that is smooth, visually appealing, and additionally very resistant.

Moisture-reactive Polyurethane (PUR) hot melt adhesives from the product family of Jowatherm-Reaktant achieve best results in laminating with thermoplastic foils. For adhesive application onto the foil underside, special products are available for low application temperatures. This will result in a reduced thermal impact on the films, and also lower energy consumption in the production. If the PUR hot melt adhesive is applied to the substrate panels, products with a long open time and fast development of green strength (initial strength) to allow efficient processing.

A clear improvement of the impact resistance could be achieved by lamination with a new reactive PUR hot melt adhesive of the Jowatherm-Reaktant product family. This clear, transparent product is suitable for laminating transparent, brilliant films to panel substrates, and also for doubling of decor foils with transparent foils. The high impact resistance (Shore-Hardness) of the adhesive permits to stack the panels immediately after lamination and the risk of indentations will be minimized – even at elevated temperatures.
