ACS Moves Forward With Back

Marion, IN- Advanced Cabinet Systems (ACS), a manufacturer of Division 12 Plastic Laminate Casework and Retail Store Fixtures, has moved forward with upgrading its standard cabinet back. ACS started to manufacture cabinets with the new full 3/4" thick back within the last month, a first in casework manufacturing. “This change in cabinet construction is not only a ‘win’ for our clients and end users,” says Jay Higgins, Director of Casework Sales at ACS, “it also is a win for ACS, too.”

“The 3/4" thick back, which is doweled into all four sides of the cabinet, makes for a stronger, sturdier cabinet. But that is not the only advantage,” says Higgins. ACS made the change in their cabinet construction method to produce a better product and reduce the time it takes to manufacture a cabinet. Higgins continues, “Because we practice LEAN manufacturing at ACS, the process of changing to the 3/4" back eliminates some steps in the engineering, purchasing and manufacturing processes. The elimination of these steps resulted in quicker production and lead times.”

The 3/4" thick, doweled back also is accepted by AWI Premium Grade standards without any further processes to make it acceptable. “When we produced casework with a 1/2", captured back, AWI dictated that we staple the perimeter of that back every 4" to make it Premium Grade acceptable. This process was timely and somewhat risky. If a staple doesn’t quite go in the right way, it could damage the interior of the cabinet. We have eliminated this costly, time consuming step now, and are producing a better product in the process,” adds Higgins.

The 3/4" back has been added to the specification section of their casework catalog. The revised specification can be downloaded from the ACS website www.advancedcabinetsystems.com or contact Jay Higgins at [email protected] for a copy.
