Woodworkers Gear Up for WMS 2013, Wood Tech Summit

WMS, Woodworking Machinery & Supply Expo WMS 2013 will bring the largest assembly of woodworking machinery, supplies and services from around the world right to the doorstep of the Canadian wood products industry. The show will feature everything from CNC machining centers and computer software through cabinet hardware and finishing materials. As of mid-July, Hall 4 of Toronto’s International Centre was sold out and space in Hall 5 was more than two-thirds sold.

WMS 2013 also will feature a free education conference. Presentations will cover key issues related to profitability and industry trends, from how to find new customers and break into new markets, through how to run your shop leaner and greener.

The International Centre is located mere minutes from Pearson International Airport and offers plenty of free parking. WMS 2013 organizers have contracted the nearby Four Points by Sheraton to serve as the event’s headquarters hotel. Reservations for the group rate of $120 per night can be made on the WMS website or by phoning (905) 678-1400.

WMS 2013 is backed by leading North American trade associations, including: the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC), Canadian Kitchen Cabinet Assn. (CKCA), Canadian Woodworking Machinery Distributors Assn. (CWMDA), Wood Manufacturing Council (WMC), Wood Component Manufacturers Assn. (WCMA) and Wood Machinery Manufacturers of America (WMMA).

Wood Tech Summit Leadership Conference

The Wood Tech Summit Leadership Conference, a full-day conference featuring tabletop exhibits, is slated for Oct. 23, at the Four Points by Sheraton. It will feature seven timely presentations by representatives of some of the most innovative Canadian woodworking companies.

Speakers include:

• Luke Elias of Muskoka Cabinet Co., which is using RFID technology to track production and inventory;

• Pierre Fournier of Triangle Kitchen Ltd., which augments its domestic manufacturing with off-shoring from China;

• Sepp Gmeiner of Lignum Consulting, a well-traveled industry expert who will discuss best practices for building a successful competitive wood products business;

• Adam Hofmann of Bogdon & Gross Furniture (BG), which has seized the benefits of operating within a wood manufacturing cluster;

• Bastien Larouche, Ro-Bois-Tic, owner of the light’s out robotic woodworking plant featured on the February cover of Wood Products;

• Anne-Marie Snook of Nienkämper, a multiple winner of design awards and recognized as one of Canada’s 50 best-managed companies;

• Denis Staples, co-owner of Deslaurier Custom Cabinets, a firm whose rise from the ashes of a devastating fire was so compelling that it was featured in a best-selling book.
