Wood Finishers Can Reduce VOC Emissions with 'Greener' StainsCLEVELAND – Sherwin-Williams Product Finishes will introduce two stains created to address rigid VOC emissions requirements at the Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers (AWFS) Fair in Las Vegas, July 24-27. OEMs and other wood finishers who need to reduce or eliminate emissions in their finishing operations no longer have to compromise application and appearance expectations. Both stains are formulated with raw materials that are reported to contain no VOCs, and have theoretical emitted (calculated) VOCs of 0.0 lb/gal and 0.02 lb/gal, respectively.

VOC content limits continue to be lowered in many areas of North America, and finishers require new options to traditional stains said Bill Fiorillo, global market director, Kitchen Cabinets and Furniture, Sherwin-Williams. “We developed Sher-Wood WB-S and Sher-Wood WB-W to not only address emissions limits but provide the high quality look that our customers expect when using our products," Fiorillo added.

Sher-Wood WB-S is a water-based spray stain that offers a uniform appearance with minimal to no grain raise and quality touch-up characteristics. The system also minimizes color variance when using solid wood and veneer on the same part. Sher-Wood WB-W is a water-based wiping stain that provides excellent clarity and a uniform appearance with minimal to no grain raise. Water clean-up for this low-odor stain is fast and easy.

The introduction of Sher-Wood WB-S and Sher-Wood WB-W stains at AWFS 2013 complements the previously-announced AWFS introduction of four additional formaldehyde free finishes by Sherwin-Williams -- Sher-Wood F3 Hi-Bild PreCat White Lacquer, Sher-Wood F3 Kemvar Plus Conversion Varnish, Sher-Wood F3 Kemvar® Plus Surfacer, and Sher-Wood F3 PreCat Primer/Surfacer.
