Residential Furniture Orders Up 12% October 2014 vs 2013

New orders for residential furniture increased 12 percent in October compared to a year earlier, according to the latest survey of manufacturers and distributors by High Point accounting and consulting firm Smith Leonard.

One-time furniture manufacturing giant Vaughan Furniture, Galax, VA, will close operations. The company, which at it peak employed 1,800 in multiple factory sites, now wholesales furniture and has just a handful of workers.

U.S. Hardwood Export Pinched by Dollar's Rise, Port Strikes

U.S. hardwood exports were beginning to be pinched by Wests Coast labor strife and a rising dollar. Red Oak was in very strong demand, as U.S. sales reached $219 in October, and were up 28 percent for the year so far at $1.97 billion.

Steelcase Customer Order Delays Hurt Sales; French Plant Transfer

Furniture manufacturer Steelcase Inc. reports third quarter revenues grew 1.9 percent to $800 million, though delays in ship dates for Americas orders hurt sales. Closet of a plant in France led to a $27 million charge.
