Softwood Exports Rose, Lumber Prices Fell as Dollar Strengthened

Softwood lumber exports were 5-8% higher in Canada, Russia and the Nordic countries in 2014, but lumber prices fell toward year's end on a strengthening US dollar and weaker wood markets in Europe and Asia.


HNI Furniture Sales +15.8% to $523 Million; Net Drops on Closure

HON furniture parent HNI Corp. sales exceeded the half billion dollar mark first quarter 2015, rising 15.8% to $523.5 million. But net income dropped on higher shipping costs and a $1 million furniture plant closure charge.


Unsold Common Oak, Hard and Soft Maple, Cherry Depress Prices

Demand and prices are firmer for upper-grade lumber than for #1 Common and below in most hardwood species. Inventories of unsold Red Oak, White Oak, Hard Maple, Soft Maple and Cherry continue to build, especially in the commons.

The 2015 Wooden Globe Winners were awarded this morning at the Wood Industry Conference in San Antonio. Winners include Pittsburg State educators Doug Hague and Charles Phillips; Menck Windows for innovation; and New England Casket for technology.
