Residential Furniture Orders Increase 4% in July

New orders for residential furniture increased 4 percent in July compared to a year earlier, according to the latest survey of manufacturers and distributors by High Point accounting and consulting firm Smith Leonard.

A female beetle decoy may soon rid the United States of the destructive emerald ash borer. Male beetles land on the female ash borer decoy in an attempt to mate and are instead electrocuted by a high-voltage current.

Canfor Acquisition Spree Continues, Purchases Southern Lumber Co.

Canfor Corp. continues its acquisition spree of U.S. lumber firms with the purchase of Southern Lumber Co.'s operating assets.The $48.7 million purchase is expected to be completed by the end of first quarter 2015.

MasterBrand Parent Okays $250 Million Buyback as Housing Recovers

WoodCrafters and MasterBrand Cabinets' parent Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc. (NYSE: FBHS) will repurchase $250 million in shares of its common stock. Yesterday competitor Masco announced it would buy back 50 million of its shares.

Composite Panel Group Elects Officers for 2015

Roseburg's Grady Mulbery will take over the reigns as chairman of the Composite Panel Association in 2015. Additional 2015 officers and board members were also elected.

Masco Spinning Off $1.8 Billion Installation Service Group

Masco, parent of Masco Cabinetry and its Merillat and KraftMaid lines, says it will spin-off its installation and services businesses into a publicly-traded company. It also will buy back 50 million shares and plans to lay off 40 percent of headquarters staff.

Hemlock, Spruce, Cedar Logging Auction at Tongass Forest

U.S. Forest Service will auction rights to almost 10 square miles of logging rights at Tongass National Forest. Hemlock, spruce and cedar woodlands will be sold in an effort to support logging and sawmill firms until second growth forest lands mature.

Fatal Accident at Boise Cascade Plywood Plant

A 29-year-old worker died Friday in an industrial accident at Boise Cascade's plywood plant in Moncure, NC.
