A charity auction today at Bonhams, New York City, for Eric Clapton’s wood guitars, including a 1948 Gibson, could net hundreds of thousands of dollars. In 2004, an auction of Eric Clapton’s Blackie Fender Stratocaster brought in $959,500. Sociologists analyze why even replicas of Clapton’s acoustic wood guitars, including simulated nicks, cuts and dents, sell for five figures, reports the New York Times.

Another Clapton Gibson being auctioned, featuring a cherry red finish, thinline maple laminate body with double cutaways, maple laminate top with f-holes, mahogany neck, twenty-two fret bound rosewood fingerboard with double parallelogram inlays. It is expected to bring in $12,000. aThe 1948 natural  finish Gibson, with gold-plated parts, maple body with round cutaway, spruce top with bound f-holes, two-piece flame maple neck, twenty-four fret bound rosewood fingerboard with block inlays, headstock facing with Gibson script logo and flower pot motif inlays, is expected to bring in $20,000 to $30,000.
