CHICAGO, IL — Sue Frame, a sculptor, woodworker and assistant director at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was in Jacmel, Haiti on January 12 when the earthquake hit, according to the Chicago Tribune. She immediately ran outside of a local hotel at the first tremor, but her friend and fellow artist, Flo McGarrell, also a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was unable to escape the collapsing building.
Frame was in the country teaching Haitian women woodworking skills and delivering donated tools and materials to Haitian artisans.
Jacmel, a small coastal town, is approximately 20 miles from the nation’s capital Port-au-Prince and received extensive damage in the quake. Aid has been slow to arrive because the road into the city is impassable.
Frame plans to remain in the region until she is able to recover her friend and bring his ashes home for a memorial.
