WASHINGTON, DC - Approximately 16,700 Rockland Furniture wood drop-side cribs have been recalled by J.C. Penney Purchasing Corp. of Plano, TX.

The cribs were manufactured by Nan Far Woodworking Co. Ltd. of Taiwan.

According to the CPSC, the cribs' drop sides can malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, creating a potential entrapment or fall hazard. J.C. Penney has received five reports in which the drops sides malfunctioned or detached. In one of the instances, a child became entrapped and sustained minor scratches and bruises, CPSC said.

J.C. Penney sold the cribs between 2005 and 2008 fro between $150 and $400. Nan Far Woodworking is offering a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop side.

Last November, J.C. Penney recalled about 8,000 drop-side cribs made by Ty Wei Co. Ltd., another Taiwanese wood products company.

The CPSC voted to ban drop-side cribs in December 2010. The safety agency said there were more than 30 children's deaths and more than 11 million recalls tied to drop-side cribs during the first decade of the 21st century. The ban includes the resale of drop-side cribs manufactured and sold before the CPSC rule went into effect.
