RALEIGH, NC – Antique Reclaimed Lumber (ARL)  of Nebo recently received a $23,000 Recycling Business Development grant from the North Carolina Division of Environmental Assistance and Outreach.

ARL specializes in making custom wood furniture, cabinets and flooring from wood it reclaims from old the dismantling of barns, churches and homes. Owner Phillip Price told The McDowell News that the monies would be used toward the purchase of "much-needed woodworking equipment including a belt sander, straight-line saw and dust collection system.

ARL successfully applied for a grant from the 2012 Recycling Business Development grant program.  Many of the grants awarded this year have addressed construction and demolition waste recycling, and food waste collection and composting.

Grant awards came through DEAO’s Recycling Business Assistance Center, with funding from the state Solid Waste Management Trust Fund. This trust fund is supported by partial proceeds from a fee on the sale of new tires, a tax on virgin newsprint and an advanced disposal fee on appliances.

Examples of other new grant recipients include AAA Hauling of NC in Fayetteville, which received a grant of $40,000 for the purchase of mobile material handling equipment to more efficiently move loads of reclaimed construction materials and Barnhill Contracting in Tarboro, which received a $25,000 grant to install a equipment to produce asphalt mixes using recycled shingles.
