WASHINGTON - Lea Industries of High Point, NC, is voluntarily recalling some 63,600 wooden bunk beds due to problems with the bed’s side mattress support rails.

Lea Furniture Industries Bunkbed Recall The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, joined by Health Canada, said the rails can break creating a fall hazard. Lea Industries, which sourced the bunk beds from factories in Vietnam and China, has received 23 reports of incidents involving the recalled beds since 2009, including one in Canada. Two injuries were reported in a 2009 incident in Madison, WI, in which the top bunk bearing an 11-year-old girl collapsed on her 6-year-old sister. The younger sister was treated for a cut to her face at an emergency room, CPSC said.

The reccall involves 34 different Lea children’s bed collections, including loft, bunk and panel styles in twin, full and queen sizes bearing names like Jessica McClinitlock, Sponge Bob Surf Club and Lea Elite Hannah. About 59,400 of the beds were sold in the U.S. and 4,200 beds were sold in Canada.

CPSC and Health Canada urge consumers to stop using the beds and contact Lea Industries to receive free replacement side rails for the beds.
