Jeld-Wen's defense, Gibson seeks relief topped week in wood

This week's latest news finds Masco Cabinetry preparing to auction 840,000 square foot Kraftmaid Cabinet plant in Utah, dormant since its December 2008 closure. Mergers and consolidations abound, with Universal Forest Products combining divisions and Hardwoods Distribution acquiring Frank Paxton Lumber among the latest announcements.

Gibson Guitar, stormed by Federal agents invstigating suspected use of protected woods (a violation of the Lacey Act) continued to gather momentum. the CEO launched a petition asking president Obama to intervene on its behalf.

Amid the turbulent global bond market, window and door giant Jeld-Wen and Canadian investor Onix faced challenges raising funds, navigating the same choppy waters that caused Groupon and others to delay public offerings.

 Jeld-Wen faces financial challenges 

 PORTLAND, OR — Window and door manufacturer Jeld-Wen says despite difficulties faced in raising $575 million in bond sales, (funding from investor Onex was contingent on the  sales) its funding is on track. Last month Jeld-Wen named Philip Orsino, former Masonite CEO, as president. Rod Wendt, JELD-WEN’s CEO and President since 1992, will remain as CEO.
