Glass Cabinet Doors Return for 2013NEW YORK, NY - Glass cabinet doors return along with the revival of other 1980s home décor trends.

"I could make glass cabinet replacement doors all day long," says Neal Scher, at Wood Smyths, a custom furniture builder and cabinet maker in Chicago. "Everyone wants them."

Glass cabinet doors reached the height of popularity in the 1980s. Consumers liked the way they show off Glass cabinet fronts show off expensive china and glassware, but keep items safe and orderly - matching the conspicuous consumption lifestyle of the period.

When glass front cabinets dipped in popularity, they became harder to find, according to Kitchen Cabinet Depot, a New York retailer of ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinetry. The company says the return in popularity of glass front cabinets convinced it to offer them in the same ready-to-assemble style as its other cabinets.

"Often, customers are unsure if they can do it themselves," says the company. "They might have questions about how to measure or how to handle an outside corner. They may want to know just how hard it really is to install.”

While some customers are intimidated by the breakable glass component, Kitchen Cabinet Depot says its support staff guide them through installation.
