Furniture factory could follow land gift

DAVIE COUNTY, NC - A large-scale furniture factory could soon follow, if local speculation about a 360-acre land donation to the Davie County Economic Development Corp.

Valued at $3.5 million, the land was provided to Davie County by R.J. Reynolds. The tobacco company is among enterprises supporting the transition of the state's economy to non-tobacco manufacturing enterprises, channeling funding through the Gold Leaf Foundation.

Stanley Furniture received a $1 million grant from the foundation to support retooling its Robbinsville, NC plant.  

Local media have reported for months on the possiblity that Ashley Furniture the company behind a development known as "Operation Top Drawer." In August, the Gold Leaf Foundation confirmed to Woodworking Network that it secured a $2.5 million grant  for Top Drawer to facilitate an unspecified furniture manufacturing operation opening in Davie County, NC.

The state of North Carolina passed a tax credit of $168,000 in June for an unnamed 550-employee manufacturing plant.
