PHILADELPHIA - Conestoga Wood Specialties and its owners Norma Hahn, Norman Lemar Hahn, and Anthony Hahn, filed a civil lawsuit against three U.S. government agencies claiming provisions of the Affordable Care Act requiring insurance coverage of birth control for workers violates their Mennonite religious beliefs.

The filing, a copy of which was obtained by Woodworking Network, was made Dec. 4  in Philadelphia U.S. District Court. It states that for Conestoga, it would be "sinful and immoral for the company to participate in, pay for, facilitate or otherwise support contraception" that would have the same effect as an abortion.

"The mandate illegally and unconstitutionally coerces the plaintiffs to violate their sincerely held religious beliefs under threat of heavy fines and penalties," reads the suit, which names as defendants Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services; Hilda Solis, Secretary of Labor; and Timothy Geithner, Treasury Secretary, as well as their respective departments.

Failure to implement the Federal Health Care Act mandate, which is being resisted by the Catholic Church and other religious groups, would cost Conestoga up to $100 daily fines per employee.

Founded in 1964, Conestoga Wood Specialties employs 950 manufacturing doors and wood components for the kitchen cabinet industry at Pennsylvania plants in Beavertown, Beaver Springs, and East Earl; and at Kenly, NC, Kent, WA and Tooele, UT.
