China furniture takes hit; $3 billion cabinetry spinoff topped news

How Big Is Cabinetry Market? $6.69 Billion Says KCMARESTON, VA – U.S. kitchen and bath cabinetry is a $6.69 billion dollar industry. That's the word in a first-ever market study size by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Assn.

KCMA, which for years has issued monthly Trend of Business figures on cabinetry sales volume, says it used a multiplicity of sources to assemble the data, including member companies’ information, third party sources, and other leading research studies.

The 82 members of KCMA who share their sales data for the monthly Trend of Business Survey, reported that August 2011 cabinet sales increased +2.9 percent compared to August 2010. Stock cabinet sales increased by +7.0 percent; semi-custom sales decreased -3.0 percent and custom sales increased by +13.5 percent.

A KCMA task force charged with assembling the data found the U.S., wood-based, residential cabinet market for the year ending 2010 totaled $6.997 billion, says Dick Titus, KCMA executive VP.

How Big Is Cabinetry Market? $6.69 Billion Says KCMA “The 82 KCMA member companies reporting in the TOB represent just over 66 percent of the total cabinet market based on 2010’s final value reported,” Titus says. About half the participating companies have annual sales of $10 million or less; 11 percent have sales exceeding $100 million.

The task force began by assembling 2009 data - a year for which all data was available - then calculated total industry sales based on the rises and falls in volume recorded in the 2010 Trend of Business figures.

“This approach represents a sound and reasonable method," says KCMA president Greg Stoner, who also heads MasterBrand Cabinets, Jasper, IN. "We chose to narrow the focus to 'residential, wood-based' cabinets as a more focused view of the market."

Non-residential cabinets and steel cabinets weren't tabulated into this study."We believe that this methodology and definition of the market size provides the most timely and best estimate for the U.S., wood-based, residential cabinet market,” says Stoner.
