FT. LAUDERDALE, FL - Living Color Aquariums, the company that builds landmark aquariums and the cabinetry and casework to go with, is the subject a six-episode series on National Geo WILD Channel, called "Fish Tank Kings," launching May 12.
While the show dives into the pressure-filled job of building massive aquariums, a good portion of the custom fabricating and woodworking firm's work is in building out the cabinetry and interior settings that will support the tanks.
As a result, Living Color Enterprises has a large woodshop: 43,000 square feet. When not handling museum projects, nature centers, or efforts like a giant (and fast-ball proof) fish tank for the Florida Marlins baseball stadium, Living Color Aquariums does a healthy business in kitchen cabinets, custom cabinetry and millwork, along with commercial fabrication of complex themed environments.
Headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, Living Color Enterprises Inc. was founded in 1988.
"We have long been at the forefront of aquarium exhibit and custom cabinetry design and manufacturing," according to the company's website. Building out themed commercial environments for high profile clients like Disney, Universal Studios, Sea World, Rainforest Café, Bass Pro Shops, Living Color established the infrastructure to handle projects of all sizes.
One of Living Color’s largest commercial projects included designing and building Animal Kingdom Lodge at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. Its cabinetry division also handled the work on a landmark renovation of a South Beach Hotel in Miami, and a residential community sales center, which involved designing and building more than 80 unique pieces.
Living Color custom cabinets manufactures hand-crafted cabinetry for individual custom installations, designing and fabricating within its 43,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Fort Lauderdale. The company says its design and engineering software (using 3-D rendering applications such as AutoCAD) are fully interactive so creatives and engineers can collaborate.
In addition to the cabinet shop, its facility features a wood shop prep area, allowing a mock up an entire project before sending the products to for installation. State-of-the-art equipment includes point-to-point cutters and other CNC machines - useful in both woodworking and fabricating unusually shaped fish tanks.
A full cross-flow spray booth is used in finishing. "Our finishing area ensures integrity by utilizing a separate compressor for the clear-coat and sealing guns to make certain that they stay clean when spraying," the company notes at its site.
In the National Geographic Show, each episode follows the Living Color Aquariums team as they create impressive fish tanks. Episodes include the aquarium build for the Miami Marlins, as well as for an Indy Race Car driver, the Florida Aquarium, Tennessee Aquarium and All Pets Emporium.
