NATCHEZ, MS — Custom cabinetmaker Adam Gwin Fine Furniture has opened a 1,200-square-foot shop in Natchez, MS.Natchez Furniture Maker Opens New Shop

Gwin, who concentrates on period furniture, told the Natchez Democrat, “I build things the way they used to, which is fairly important to what I do.”

Gwin usestraditional finishes such as a hand rubbed French polish or shellac for some period-style pieces. Representative of his work are a Sheraton server made of mahogany and veneered in crotch mahogany and avadire; a Sheraton writing table made of mahogany, its drawers  assembled with hand-cut dovetails and banded in holly, the top finished in red tooled leather; and a provincial mechanical table made of reclaimed antique southern pine.  

Natchez Furniture Maker Opens New ShopGwin traces his interest in woodworking to his childhood, when his mother gave him a jigsaw for a Christmas present. Gwin reports he studied with an area antique restorer at Lower Lodge Antiques, and later with a Natchez furniture maker, Steve Huber.
