Rise in Global Window and Door Demand Projected Through 2017

CLEVELAND- OH - Global demand for windows and doors is expected to rise 7.1% annually to $223 billion through 2017, exceeding the growth rate of the 2007-2012 period, according to a report by The Freedonia Group, Inc.

Recoveries in the building construction markets of many developed countries will drive growth, although gains will be exaggerated a bit by a weak 2012 base, particularly in the United States.

The world’s largest window and door market in 2012 was China, and the country will see its share of global demand rise to 36% of the total in 2017. Gains should be boosted by continuing rapid economic growth and industrialization, an increase in the average size of a housing unit in the country, and rising personal and household incomes. China is also expected to post healthy demand gains of 8.7% annually through 2017, a slower rate than the previous decade, but still among the uppermost in the world.

The U.S. market for windows and doors is expected to post a strong recovery, with gains of over 10% per year through 2017, after experiencing large declines between 2007 and 2012. The anticipated recovery in the U.S. housing market will primarily drive demand. Western Europe is also projected to see a recovery through 2017 after previously seeing declining demand.

Swift demand gains are also expected in the Africa/Mideast region and South America, although slightly below the world average. Rising personal incomes will lead to the implementation of more Western style building practices, encouraging the use of modern windows and doors and boosting demand gains.
