GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Kindel Furniture has acquired the assets, operations and intellectual property of Karges Furniture. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Both family-owned, the residential furniture companies have been manufacturing high-end, American-made casegoods for more than 100 years.

According to a statement issued by Kindel, operations for the 128-year-old, Evansville, IN-based Karges Furniture will be transitioned to Kindel's facility in Grand Rapids by fall 2014. Until then, the current backlog of Karges' orders will be handled by both Karges' and Kindel's facilities.

Karges produces handcrafted dining room, bedroom and occasional furniture on fine hardwoods, many items made with hand carving and gold leaf decoration.

Founded in 1901, Kindel Furniture also specializes in handcrafted occasional, dining room and bedroom furniture.

"Our desire is to invest in the Karges brand and continue the tradition of craftsmanship carried forth by five generations of Karges family ownership. Not only does it ensure the continuation of the Karges brand, but it strengthens the Kindel brand because we share the same values of American hand craftsmanship," said James A. Fisher, chairman of Kindel.

"While it's bittersweet to sell a family-owned business, we believe Kindel is the right company to carry on the Karges tradition," said Joan Karges Rogier, president of Karges Furniture. "Kindel's reputation for hand craftsmanship and superior attention to detail combined with its manufacturing and marketing resources provide a strong platform to bring Karges to a broader audience for many years to come."

Gretchen Keith, the great, great grand-daughter of Karges founder Albert Karges, will join Kindel as  vice president of marketing and sales.
