PORTLAND, OR – Contemporary kitchen cabinets, quartz countertops, and increased popularity for pre-finished and engineered wood flooring are among the top trends for home interiors Neil Kelly Co. sees for 2013.

The award-winning design-build remodeling firm bases its predictions on information gleaned from suppliers and vendors in the industry.

According to Neil Kelly, some of the design trends to watch for in 2013 include:

• The trend toward low-  or no-maintenance extends to the kitchen countertops, where Neil Kelly sees granite being dethroned in favor of quartz composite, "the closest thing to no maintenance, bullet-proof countertop materials available today."

A rarer stone than Carrara marble, the firm says Calcatta is being prized for the whiter background and bolder gray veins it presents.

• Continuing that theme, Neil Kelly notes that charcoal is the new black. "2013 will find this silky color everywhere as it blends the right amount of chocolate, gray and a touch of green," the company said.

"Pre-finished woods provide a hard, durable finish, are an installation time saver, and eliminate the sanding dust dilemma. Engineered wood floors are also compatible with under-floor heating systems, a big plus in cold climates," the design firm notes.
