Wood may be replaced with plastic and concrete in New York City's famous Coney Island boardwalk. But not without a fight.

The local papers have been reporting on a year-long battle to replace the wooden boards along stretches of New York City's 2.7-mile boardwalk with concrete. Citizens rose up against that notion, signing petitions to stop it.

What's the romance of walking on a plastic dock or boardwalk? None at all. And the wood industry's scientists could fix this whole problem - there are multiple solutions. Thermally treated wood, acetylated wood, even salted wood can all stand up to weather and resist rot for years.

Somehow the city's parks department hasn't heard about this stuff, even though Brad Pitt has lended it a little notoriety to ordered another variation on processed wood.

 “It’s like putting a piece of plastic into a diamond ring, and this is our jewel,”  Rob Burstein, the chairman of the Coney-Brighton Boardwalk Alliance told the New York Times. His group is circulating a petition against replacing wood with plastic.
